Two Japanese superfoods I use to cure a cold

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

How do you cure a cold? I am sure your culture has a lot of wisdom around that. When we catch a cold, we cannot be so enthusiastic for everything, and we want to recover as soon as possible. When I don’t feel well, I take two Japanese superfoods and sleep early. And it works.

1. Kuzu (Kudzu)-yu

When I catch a cold, the cause is most likely that my body gets physically cold, and my immune system weakens. When our temperature is higher, our immune system works more efficiently.

“Kuzu" is arrowroot, and “yu" means hot water in Japanese.

Kuzu is also used in traditional Chinese medicine. Kuzu-yu warms our body very well. Kuzu improves our blood circulation and enhance our perspiration. This helps us recover from a cold faster.

This is how to make Kuzu-yu

1 Pour boiling water into an empty cup to warm the cap. (cup needs to be warm, so that Kuzu- yu becomes transparent) After the cup gets warm, pour the water out of the cup to a pan/kettle. You will re-boil the water later.

2 Put two tablespoons of Kuzu powder, and dissolve with two to three tablespoons of water.

3 Add boiling water and stir.

4 You can mix ginger, sesame powder, matcha powder, honey, sugar, whatever you like into it.

2. Umeboshi

Second superfood is umeboshi, which is a traditional Japanese healthy food.

Umeboshi is a pickled plum(Japanese apricot), very sour and very salty. I didn't like it when I was a child. But recently I get used to it. I eat umeboshi when I feel unwell, as well as I am tired. It contains citric acid, which helps us recover from fatigue quickly.

Umeboshi was believed to have a lot of benefits.

—-Benefits of Umeboshi—-

1 Prevention of gastritis, gastric ulcer and stomach cancer

2 Anti-oxidation effect

3 Prevention of diabetes and high blood pressure

4 Recovering from fatigue

And so on.

The most common way to eat umeboshi is to eat with plain rise. You can use umeboshi for dressing or sauce for salad, etc.

You may find it very salty, so start with a little bit.

And after you eat it, make sure you rinse your mouth because it is very sour and it can damage your teeth.

But umeboshi itself is alkaline food. Once it goes into our body it works as alkaline food.

You will be able to find those foods online. Give it a try, and let us know how it goes! And share with us what you do to cure a cold.
