The right way to let go of your attachment

My uncle said this years ago. “Don’t do good things to others, expecting to receive a blessing.”


I used to believe, (and maybe still believe) that if I do good things, probably God/the Universe/Higher Power will treat me well. Have you ever thought like that?


But what my uncle said was “don’t expect a favor in return“ either from the person you were kind to, or from any other people, or God/The Universe/Higher Power. And my experience tells me doing good things expecting a favor in return doesn’t work. Why?


This is my answer after some thoughts.

When we expect something from others, or even from God/The Universe/Higher Power, we subconsciously think “I don’t have enough power to achieve it.” This “not-enough mind” will attract “not-enough-ness”.


We attract what we subconsciously believe.

Not only from my uncle, I have heard lots of people saying it is critical to let go of attachment in order to attract what we want. We attract what we subconsciously believe because we try to find all the proofs that show we are right.

By the way…

We Japanese go to temples and shrines on the New Year day. Lot of us pray for passing entrance exams, health, wealth and so on.





But we say this is not the way we should do. We say temples and shrines are the places where we thank God, or our environment. Not the places to ask for something.


All these are telling us to let go of attachment. We should commit to processes, but we have to let go of what happens after we do everything we can do.

When we have attachment, the attachment is coming from scarcity, but actually we already have enough power inside us. And we have to know we already have enough.


This is very difficult. First I determine to let go of attachment, but it is easy to forget. This is a life-long training.

What we can do is

1 In the morning meditation, we tell ourselves to let go of attachment.

2 Be in the present moment.

3 Read “Untethered Soul” by Michael A Singer.
