Can you tell healthy processed food from unhealthy ones?

When I was a child, I loved sausages. I was very happy when my mom put sausages in my lunch box. But that was until I learned processed foods were bad for our health. I seldom eat processed meat now, but I don’t miss it.

Many people know processed foods are not good for our health. But what if there are healthy processed foods?

Actually, there are.

I found there exist healthy processed foods when I was reading the book “Food What the heck should we eat?” by Mark Hyman, MD. He said, “there are also examples made with whole food and using traditional methods.”

He said in the book those processed foods below are healthy (as long as organic and contain no sugar):

Tofu

Tempeh

Yogurt

Kefir

Cheese

Chocolate

Kimchi

Sauerkraut

Jerky

Hummus

Nut butter

I would add some Japanese traditional food such as

Miso

Natto (fermented soybeans)

The criteria to tell if the processed food is healthy or not are 1) whether the process is simple, 2) the food is traditionally produced.

Do you have any healthy processed foods in your country?

Traditionally, people processed foods to preserve them, to make them taste better, to increase nutrition, and/or to make them easy to digest. Not all processed foods are unhealthy. What is important is to tell whether the processed food is healthy or not. Obviously, we should avoid those with a lot of artificial food additives.

Processed foods are acid generally

Be careful in taking processed food as it is acid and some of them are addictive.

Generally, processed foods are acid. While there is an argument around the benefits of alkaline food, taking too much acid food is not good for our skin in my experience. Our body is kept at a pH of 7.4. It doesn’t help to eat too much acid food as our body has to work hard to keep it at a pH of 7.4. A balanced meal is the best for our skin and our whole well-being.

I created a program to heal skin problems based on balanced meals and stress management. If you are interested, go to Kirei Skin Revolution. It is starting on May 8, 2022.
