Burdock tea – The popular antiaging tea in Japan. You can make it on your own

Burdock tea is popular tea known as “antiaging tea” after Dr. Yoshinori Nagumo introduced it. What is good about the tea is not only healthy but also tasty and we can make it at home if you can buy burdock. And it is caffeine-free, so we can drink it any time even pregnant ladies.

What is burdock?

You might not be familiar with burdock. It is one of the root crops.

There is no wild burdock in Japan. It came to Japan from China, and people started eating it in the Heian period (794-1192). It is a very common vegetable in Japan, but it is seldom eaten outside of Japan, according to an encyclopedia.

Why is burdock tea good for antiaging?

Burdock contains inulin and saponin, both of which bring us health benefits.

Inulin

Inulin is a water-soluble dietary fiber. “A complex of sugar present in the roots of various plants and used medically to test kidney function,” according to the Oxford Dictionary of English.

Inulin restrains the absorption of sugar, and it also improves our intestinal environment.

Saponin

Saponin is a material that has an antioxidation effect and also enhances our immune system. Leguminous plants, Asiatic ginseng, and burdock skin contain saponin.

Let’s make burdock tea!

Making burdock tea is really easy if you find burdock at a supermarket.

  1. Wash a burdock root. Don’t peel it.

  2. Cut into pieces using a peeler.

  3. Dry them under the sun for 5-6 hours. Shortcut: microwave for 2-3 minutes.

  4. Roast on a fly pan for 10 minutes. When it becomes crispy, it is done!

  5. Brew the crispy burdock pieces in freshly boiled water for 3 minutes and remove the burdock. Or boil the crispy burdock pieces for 10 minutes for a stronger taste.

The burdock left behind can be put into the soup such as minestrone, miso soup, etc.

If you cannot find burdocks in supermarkets in your neighborhood, burdock tea is available online too.

Burdock tea contains a lot of dietary fiber, so drinking too much could cause diarrhea. Be careful.

So, try and taste burdock tea to see if it works for you.
