Ancient Japanese Tradition for Attracting Wealth

There are some traditions handed down from ancient times in Japan.

One of them is:

When we clean the toilet, luck with money comes to us.

We also believe God stays in the toilet.

The God's name is Ususama Myo-o (Ucchuṣma in Sanskrit).

This is the story.

When a new house is built, Gods come with gifts to stay in the home.

Other Gods than Ususama Myo-o arrive at the house earlier than Ususama Myo-o because their gifts are fewer and lighter than Ususama Myo-o's.

The Gods that arrived earlier than Ususama Myo-o took their favorite rooms to stay in. It looks like first come, first served here.

Ususama Myo-o finally arrives at the house with a bunch of gifts, valuables, and money. That's why it takes time to arrive. The only place left for Ususama Myo-o is the toilet.

We believe that Ususama Myo-o stays in the toilet. When the toilet is clean, Ususama Myo-o is comfortable and helps us get money.

Benefits of cleaning a toilet

Well, it would be arguable whether cleaning a toilet gives us good luck with money. But there are at least a couple of benefits to cleaning a toilet, such as:

1. Making a toilet a hygienic place helps our physical health.

2. Using a clean toilet is a pleasant experience.

3. Cleaning a toilet can be a light exercise.

Higher values in cleaning a toilet than physical benefits

What the Japanese really appreciate in cleaning a toilet is that it will polish our spirit as well.

Cleaning a toilet means cultivating virtue. People are usually reluctant to clean places that are not clean, but when we do it, others appreciate it, and it could mean our spiritual growth. And it could lead to success as a human being.

Do you remember that in the Ghibli movie “Spirited Away,” Sen needs to wash a super-stinky god, and she willingly does?

These are the celebrities who cleaned a toilet regularly or appreciated cleaning a toilet:

1. Soichiro Honda (Founder of Honda Motor)

He introduced a flush toilet in 1952 and placed the toilet in the middle of a factory.

2. Konosuke Matsushita (Founder of Panasonic)

When he was the president, he found a toilet that was not cleaned yet at one of the factories and started cleaning it himself.

3. Takeshi Kitano (Film Director, Comedian and Actor)

His master told him to clean a toilet when he was young. He has been cleaning toilets ever since. He thought this was the secret of his success.

The Japanese believe that what is really good about cleaning toilets is that it builds virtue. Doing good things for other people (and ourselves) makes us feel happy, and that will eventually lead to a prosperous business and fortune. This is the real meaning of "when we clean the toilet, we are lucky with money."
