Do you meditate?
If so, why do you meditate?
I meditate when I get up and before I sleep, each time just for a couple of minutes.
Why do I meditate? Because I feel good after meditation and also it became my habit.
A couple of years ago I joined a Zazen workshop at Eiheiji-Temple, Japanese famous Zen temple. Zazen is to sit and meditate in Japanese. I am not a Zen Buddhist, but the temple has such a workshop regularly. The experience was very different from what I do in my room. I felt tense with Zen monks.
Over the years, I learned following things about meditation, and I would like to share with you. These will encourage you to meditate.
1. Zen Monks do Zazen to imitate the Buddha
“We imitate the Buddha… As the Buddha experienced spiritual awakening by doing Zazen, we do the same thing as him,” said Shoshu Hirai, a Chief priest of a Zen Buddhist temple Zensho-An in one of his books.
Imitating is a very important step to learn anything.
So when you meditate next time, please do as if you became the Buddha. You will feel tremendous power is falling upon you.
2. Japanese Zen assumes that we are already spiritually awakened but our busy lifestyle dims our sense
Recently I joined a workshop to learn Zen Buddhism. This is what the lecturer said.
Japanese Zen assumes we are already awakened. But when we are in this messy and busy world, we forget that we have already been awakened. So by doing meditation, we get back the enlightenment.
Before the Zen Buddhism came to Japan, they meditated to get awakened, with the premise that they were not awakened yet, according to the Monk.
Isn’t that amazing? We are already awakened!!
This idea made me confident. All I have to do is just to make my mind quiet.
3. The body is smarter than the mind
I forgot who said this, but I think this is true.
We tend to think the mind is smarter than the body, but is it really so?
When our body is telling something, such as “you need rest” but you just don’t listen to what your body is telling but you listen to your mind, and then you get sick. Don’t you have this kind of experience?
Your body sensation is smarter than your body. Meditation help you come back to your body and listen to what it tells you. So please scan your body after the meditation.
Let’s do this
When you meditate, please remember these things. You can start with just one mindful breath.
